Curcumin Longvida Benefits for Alzheimer’s

There is considerable research in natural products and the prevention and reversal of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Curcumin, the active component of the spice turmeric, which is widely used in Asian cuisine has come under close scrutiny for its protective effects in various animal models.

turmericLongvida®, a novel form of curcumin is over 100 fold more bioavailable than regular curcumin making it the most bioavailable form of curcumin on the market. Developed by two neuroscientists, Drs. Sally Frautschy and Greg Cole at UCLA, there is increasing animal data that supports the effectiveness of this special solid lipid particle (SLP) formulation of curcumin. Unlike some of the other bioavailable forms on the market, Longvida® actually measures the free form of curcumin in the blood and at the site of action e.g. the joints, heart, cancer cell and the nerve cells, rather than the metabolised forms that other curcumin formulations deliver. Frautschy and Cole studied over two hundred formulations of curcumin before deciding on the Longvida® form as the most effective formulation.

AD is thought to be due in part to either the accumulation in the brain of protein tangles or the plaque, which not only disrupt the transmission of nerve signals but also end up “choking” the nerve cells. More recent research indicates the culprit to be small protein pieces of the tangles and plaque that are soluble and thus harder to detect, as being the most toxic to the nerve cells. In 2011, researchers from Germany reported that 90% of young-adults under the age of 30 had these protein pieces in the brain!

In the December 2012 issue of the prestigious Journal of Biological Chemistry, the UCLA scientists reported that Longvida® form of curcumin was able to fully restore the memory and other cognitive function of the mice compared to the untreated mice. This report is exciting in that the mechanism of action is more fully explained than previous studies. This finding supports last year’s human study by University of Ohio that reported that a very low daily dose (80mg of Longvida®) could significantly reduce the plaque levels in blood of health, middle-aged adults.

The Longvida® form of curcumin is available world-wide in several different formulations from AOR including Curcumin-Active forAOR04247-Curcumin-Active-60s-L-lge inflammatory conditions, Curcu Viva (80mg) as used in the Ohio State University study for cognitive support and CurcuMind which includes curcumin plus vitamin D, another essential nutrient for brain function.
